Along the busy A4 motorway, where tens of thousands of motorists pass every day, stands the striking object The Box, a striking advertising installation by Clear Channel, a leading player in outdoor advertising. The visibility and appearance of this object are essential: it must be visually powerful, match the house style of Clear Channel and look representative of the companies and brands that advertise here.
After years of exposure to weather, sunlight and air pollution, the original blue powder coating of the facade cladding began to discolour and lost its visual power. The desire arose to give the object a modern, neat and businesslike appearance, without expensive dismantling or complete replacement of the facade material.
In consultation with the client, it was decided to apply 2C Colour Coat in the colour RAL 7021 (black-grey). This coating makes it possible to realise a completely new colour image with a single-layer system, with excellent adhesion, colour fastness and protection.
Project objective
The assignment served several strategic and technical objectives:
- Transform the object into a modern colour scheme that matches the brand identity
- Increase visibility and impact from the motorway
- Carry out an efficient, non-destructive renovation on site
- Make the existing plating more sustainable with a weather-resistant coating
- Limit the disruption or failure of advertising exploitation during implementation
- Significantly reduce the maintenance burden for the coming years

Implementation and product properties
1. Pretreatment
The facade cladding was first thoroughly cleaned with a special cleaning agent and manually degreased, so that dirt, oxidation and substances that disrupt adhesion were removed. The substrate was not completely removed, but slightly roughened for optimum adhesion.
2. Application of 2C Colour Coat
With 2C Colour Coat, the new colour RAL 7021 was applied in one layer. This product was specially developed for renovations of metal and coated facade components. Important properties are:
- Very good adhesion to existing coating systems
- Exceptional coverage, even when changing from blue to dark grey
- UV-stable – retains colour and gloss for a long time
- Dirt and water-repellent, so that the facade remains clean for a long time
- Wear and scratch-resistant – resistant to wind loads, cleaning and external factors
Because the coating could be applied in one layer, a lot of time was saved and the object remained maximally usable during the work.
Aesthetics in commercial space
For an outdoor advertising object like The Box, it is not just about technical condition, but also about aesthetics and appearance:
- Dark grey (RAL 7021) is a powerful, neutral colour that looks good both during the day and in the evening
- The new colour allows advertising expressions to contrast more strongly, which increases readability and visibility
- The smooth finish reinforces the professional appearance of Clear Channel as a manager
- A sleek facade image increases the perception value for advertisers
